I think this picture was taken at our apartment, where we lived briefly before moving to Fairfield Plantation. I know it was our place because of that freaky, shiny vinyl La-z-boy.

The reason I looked a little irked? Most likely, it was because I didn't want to be read aloud to, but rather to read the book myself. Yep, at that age, I could read, and spookily well. That also explains why I look like I'm trying to slide out of his lap--the off-the-lap limbo.

No, I have no explanation for that peasant blouse I'm wearing.

I miss reading to him. I miss him, damn it. I don't use the phrase "not fair" vey often, but I do think your only sibling's dying would fit the bill.

Of course, my maudlin sense of humor has to kick in, and I must point out that the fact that our den was orange and plaid was, if not unfair, at least unfortunate. Yes, the walls were even a more special orange than that shag carpet.

I slowly untangled the contents--long, spindly, unmarked double-pointed needles, crochet thread, giant safety pins...and this one sock. Well-fashioned, obviously crafted with care. I assume it was for a doll, rather than for a baby, because of its stubby toe and all-over shape. I wonder who made it, and for what child's doll.
